Tata Harrier Review
Tata Motors has built the Harrier on the OmegaArc Platform. The OmegaArc Platform is essentially a re-engineered version of the Jaguar Land Rover D8 Platform adopted by Range Rover Evoque, Discovery Sport, and Jaguar E-Pace.
The 2.0 Liter diesel engine that powers the Tata Harrier is sourced from Fiat and the 6-speed automatic transmission from Hyundai.
Backed by these combinations and Tata’s Stunning Impact Design 2.0, Tata has created its flagship SUV in a way that commands attention. Without a doubt, Tata Harrier is one of the best SUVs in the Indian market.
Tata Harrier gives you a BIG car feeling
Get inside the Harrier, and you will appreciate the space inside. The seats are incredibly comfortable, and you get an excellent driving position. It gives a “big car” feeling. Grab your seat in the front for a commanding view of the road.
There is decent headroom and legroom for all the passengers. The driver’s seat gets a 6-way electric adjustment option with a separate lever for lumbar support. The under-thigh support is also good.
The Harrier has a vast panoramic sunroof, and Tata claims it is the “BIGGEST” in the segment. The sunroof has a sensor. It closes when it rains or when you lock the car.
The rear cabin has generous space to accommodate three passengers. However, a hump in the center makes the middle passenger uncomfortable on a long journey. The AC vent on the B pillar does a decent job cooling the rear cabin.
Engine Option & Performance
Tata Harrier is powered by the Kryotec 2.0 Litre Turbocharged Diesel Engine sourced from Fiat. This engine also powers Jeep Compass and MG Hector in the Indian market.
The engine is more refined and complies with the BS6 emission norms. You get a choice of three drive modes and terrain modes. Switch to “sports mode,” and you will experience a significant increase in power.
Tata Harrier does 0-100 in 11.5 seconds
The 2.0-liter diesel engine is powerful enough to pull the Harrier from 0-100 kph in 11.5 seconds and gets to a top speed of 180 kph.
- Top speed tested by professionals.
- Top speed numbers are provided for information purposes only.
Tata Harrier gets hydraulic adjustable steering that feels heavier to operate at lower speeds, especially when taking that U-turn. However, the steering becomes super smooth as the Harrier picks up the pace.
Tata has made some improvements to the 6-speed gearbox as well. Now the gear falls in place with a gentle push. However, you may take some time to adjust to the clutch and brake pedals.
Harrier 6-Speed Automatic Gearbox is Sourced from Hyundai
The Harrier gets a 6-speed automatic gearbox sourced from Hyundai. It is responsive enough for daily commute in the city traffic. Nevertheless, this feels enthusiastic whether you drive the manual or the automatic version. It can munch miles like a proper Land Rover.
Tata Harrier Mileage
It depends upon how you drive. The mileage can drop as low as 10.5 km per liter in the city limits and run 18 km per liter on the highway. However, you can expect an average mileage of 12-14 km per liter of diesel.
No Crash Test Results Yet
For some reason, best known to Tata Motors or the Global NCAP, they have not done the Tata Harrier Crash Test.
There is speculation that the flagship SUV may not get a 5-star rating due to a minor issue in the engine department. Anything less than a 5-star rating will adversely affect the sales and reputation of Tata Motors, which is known to build the safest cars in India.
We will update this article once the crash test is available.
Customers who planned to buy Tata Harrier also considered buying MG Hector, Jeep Compass, and XUV700 in a similar engine capacity. However, there are more reliable SUVs with lesser engine capacity. For example, you can consider test driving the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and Volkswagen Taigun.
The Tata Harrier, without doubt, is one of the best mid-size SUVs available in the Indian market. Tata Motors have thought well to build the Harrier on the OmegaArc Platform collaborating with the Jaguar and Land Rover team.
The Harrier looks stunning, commands attention, and is a fun-to-drive SUV. The dashboard is big and looks premium, and the fabrics are no less. Not only this, the cabins offer loads of space for all five passengers with high levels of comfort.
Tata has a reputation for building the safest cars. All Tata cars have a 5-Star rating in the Global NCAP crash test result. Sadly, there has been no crash test result for Tata Harrier to date, even though the Harrier was launched sometime in 2019.
Like all the Tata Cars, I hope the Harrier will pass the Global NCAP crash test with 5-Stars and no less. This number is crucial for Tata Motors to compete with Mahindra XUV700. Apparently, the XUV700 has passed the crash test with a 5-star rating.
Tata should consider adding more features, such as ventilated seats, wireless charger, driver rearview monitor, front parking camera, 360-degree camera, and connected car tech.
Tata Harrier’s top speed is 180 kmph as tested by professionals. The Harrier does 0-100 kmph in 11.5 seconds.
The company claimed mileage is 18 km per liter which is possible on the highway. However, the Harrier mileage can drop as low as 10.5 km per liter in the city limits. The average mileage will be 12-14 km per liter of diesel.
The top model price is Rs. 19,99,900 for the Harrier XZ+ Dark edition, and the automatic top model will cost Rs. 21,34,400.
