Tata Punch Review

Look at the Tata Punch from an angle, and you will notice the resemblance to its big brothers, the Tata Harrier and Safari. The Punch has a tremendous road presence, and not only it looks like an SUV, but it is also the safest car.

Comfort Level & Quality

Tata Punch offers a great comfort level right from when you get into the car. Thanks to the doors that swing open to 90 degrees. The elderly family members will have no difficulty getting in and out.

Tata Punch Interiors
Tata Punch Interiors

The dashboard looks lovely with the body-colored air vents and a rightly placed infotainment system. The fabrics inside are of high quality, and the touch and feel of the plastic is pleasant.

There’s lots of space inside the car, both in the front and rear cabin. There is ample space for all 5 passengers with adequate thigh support, and there’s plenty of headroom. The relaxed and high seating position gives you a commanding view of the road.

Tata Punch Performance

The Tata Punch is powered by Tata’s 1.2 Liter 3 Cylinder Revotron Petrol Engine and that is the only option available now. The Tata Punch diesel version seems to be ruled out. However, you may expect the Tata Punch petrol turbo and even an EV variant in the future.

The 1.2 Liter 3 Cylinder Revotron Petrol Engine in Tata Punch produces enough power and torque to zip through city traffic and on the highways. It may not be as peppy as other small cars in the segment. However, the performance is excellent for everyday city driving.

Real-World Speed Test

Below is the real-world performance result as tested by Auto Car India.

0-60 kmh7.23 seconds
0-100 kmh16.44 seconds
20-80 kmh17.26 seconds

Tata Punch offers two modes to drive – The “City Mode and Eco Mode.” The eco-mode saves you fuel at the cost of performance.

Further, you can activate the Start/Stop feature that switches off the engine once the gear is moved to neutral and turns the engine on when you depress the clutch.

The clutch is light, but shifting gears may not be smooth. But this shouldn’t be a challenge once you are used to it.

You may opt for Tata Punch AMT if your daily commute is through bumper-to-bumper traffic. The AMT version performs better with gentle throttle inputs. For a quick overtake, you got to shift gears.

The suspension setup is excellent in absorbing and settling down over nasty bumps. There’s nobody roll, and the cabin noise is negligible.

Tata Punch Mileage

Tata Motors claims Tata Punch mileage to be 18.82 km for a liter of petrol. However, several punch owners revealed varying mileage for manual and AMT versions on a real-world test.

There is a possibility of Tata Punch running 18 km per liter when driven below 80 km in a normal traffic condition. On the highway, getting this mileage is not a challenging task.

Tata Punch AMT mileage is almost similar to that of the manual transmission. However, the actual result depends on how you drive this micro-SUV.

It is worth noting that the mileage may go as low as 11.5 km per liter when you move in bumper-to-bumper traffic conditions.

Tata Punch Crash Test

Tata Punch is rated as the safest car in India. The Global NCAP test resulted in 5 stars for adult protection and 4 stars for child protection when it crashed at 64 km per hour.

Tata Punch Competitors & Alternatives

Tata Punch has competition from Renault Kiger and the Nissan Magnite, but these two cars cost more.

Additionally, no data regarding Kiger and Magnite Global NCAP safety results are available. I Will update this section as soon as I get a hold of it.

If you prefer a small car in the segment, there’s Maruti Suzuki Ignis and Mahindra KUV for you. But these cars aren’t as fresh as the Punch.

Conclusion

The Tata Punch sub-compact SUV is a brand new offering from Tata Motors. This car gets a unique front facia that draws inspiration from the Tata Harrier. The Tata Punch looks striking and has a fabulous road presence.

Tata Punch Side Profile
Tata Punch Side Profile

Tata Punch is the third vehicle from the house of Tata Motors after the Nexon and Altroz to be awarded a total 5-star safety rating for adult occupant protection from Global NCAP. Also, the Tata Punch is now rated as India’s safest car.

If you are eying for a small, budget-friendly SUV, the Tata Punch can be the best deal.
