About Volkswagen Taigun

Volkswagen Taigun is a new entry to the midsize SUV segment in India. The car looks glamourous with the generous use of chrome all around. Like any other VW car, the Taigun is solidly built and strikes a superb ride and handling balance.

As you would have noticed in the price section, the VW Taigun comes in two petrol engine options:

  • 999 cc or 1 Liter manual and automatic transmission with the price range between 10.54 Lakh to 15.95 Lakh (ex-showroom)
  • 1498 cc or 2 Liter manual and automatic (DSG) transmission with a price range between Rs. 15.04 Lakh to 17.54 Lakh (ex-showroom)

The Taigun is pitched against Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Nissan Kicks. Will this compact SUV be a threat to its rivals? Read on.

Volkswagen Taigun In India

The Volkswagen Taigun is the first compact SUV from the Volkswagen stable made for India. Since its launch (23rd Sept 2021), the Taigun has received a good response.

On 2nd Nov 2021, HT Times reported Volkswagen registered a growth of around 50% during the previous month because of Taigun sales. The news stated that Volkwagen Taigun was instrumental to the German carmaker’s significant growth during the festive season.

According to Mr. Ashish Gupta, Brand Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India, 15% to 18% of the buyers are existing customers. This is the highest loyalty rate for any brand in India.

Mr. Ashish Gupta says – The kind of DNA we offer in our products, such as safety, build quality, and fun to drive, the customers see that lineage in Taigun.

The Taigun has given positive momentum to the brand in India.

No wonder Volkswagen India has a solid order bank until next year. The waiting period for some of the Taigun variants is as long as 3-4 months.

What do experts think about Volkswagen Taigun?

I should admit that the VW Taigun isn’t the flashiest of midsize SUVs around. The Taigun looks flamboyant, but some of its rivals sell more because they look sporty.

Volkswagen Taigun Price in India

Steady & Composed at Triple-Digit Speeds

However, the auto-experts are optimistic about Volkswagen Taigun. They have driven this vehicle on the smooth and rough roads and moved around the corners. The compact SUV feels steady and composed even at triple-digit speeds.

VW Taigun First Drive Review (HT Auto)

It’s a 4 Seater Car

The space at the rear cabin of Taigun is slightly disappointing because it can accommodate only 2 adults. You can squeeze in a child, but adding one more adult will be an uncomfortable journey for those sitting in a rear seat.

Loads of Torque

The clutch is on the heavier side, making it uncomfortable driving in a stop and go traffic. However, the engine has enough torque to compensate for the shortcomings. You don’t require to shift the gears often. The gearshift is smooth, and the steering is light, making the Taigun effortless to drive in the city.

DSG Transmission

The Taigun 1.5 Liter with DSG transmission (automatic) is a fast-shifting unit, finds the right gear at the right time. On the Taigun automatic, doing a quick overtake is easy. You also get paddle shifters to change gears manually if you want to.

Volkswagen Taigun Crash Test

VW Taigun crash test is not yet out. However, Taigun has a long list of safety features backed by the reputation of Volkswagen for offering cars that are built solid.

Other vehicles from VW stable fared well in the Global NCAP crash tests. I expect the Volkswagen Taigun crash test to be more or less similar to Tiguan.

The Global NCAP published a rating of 5 stars for Volkswagen Jetta and Tiguan in its publication dated 26th Sept 2019.

Additionally, the VW Taigun has the following safety features:

  • Up to 6 airbags
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Tyre pressure deflating warning
  • 3 headrest at the rear
  • Rear parking sensors
  • 3-point seat belts for all passengers
  • Hill Hold control with MT and AT
  • Rear parking camera
  • Break Disk Wiping
  • ISOFIX anchors
  • Electronic Differential Lock
  • Multi-collusion breaks

What to expect from the Volkswagen Taigun?

You get to choose the VW Taigun with two petrol engine options. The 1.0 Liter engine delivers instant power with minimum fuel consumption.

1.5 Liter with ACT

The 1.5 Liter petrol engine is also fuel-efficient, thanks to VW’s Active Cylinder Technology that shuts down two of the four cylinders at the lower RPMs. This technology improves engine efficiency and reduces fuel consumption.

Loads of Features

The Volkswagen Taigun is equipped with loads of features. You can customize the 8-inch digital cockpit according to your preference. The 10-inch touchscreen infotainment has pre-installed Apps for entertainment on the go. Additionally, you can connect your Android or iPhone seamlessly.

The Downside

On the downside, the VW Taigun is slightly smaller when compared with the competitors. Like I said before, the rear cabin can accommodate only two passengers. Taller passengers may suffer from a lack of headroom.

Competitors

Volkswagen Taigun has entered India’s highly competitive “compact SUV” segment. This car competes with Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Nissan Kicks, and Skoda Kushaq. Apparently, Skoda Kushaq and the VW Taigun use the same platform engineered for the Indian market.

Let’s Conclude

The Taigun has Volkswagen DNA in it. It is one of the sturdiest and fun-to-drive vehicles available in the Indian market. With VW Taigun, you will enjoy your drive to the office or to a destination that is hundreds of kilometers away.

Will the Taigun be a comfortable family car?
